The Food Safety Authority of Ireland issued closure orders to 11 businesses last month, including a shop and takeaway in Mountbolus, Co Offaly, where human waste overflowed from a manhole in a staff toilet.

What happened

The business, the Village Shop & Takeaway, had waste overflowing into a room used to store food-contact equipment. That room was adjacent to an area used for food preparation.

The details were included in the FSAI’s list of closure orders. The order applied to the Offaly shop and takeaway alongside 10 other businesses, although the supplied reports do not give further details about those premises.

The incident involved a failure affecting an area connected to food handling, rather than a routine maintenance issue confined to a non-food part of the building. The closure order stopped the business from operating while the stated conditions remained in place.

Why it matters

Closure orders are among the strongest enforcement measures available to Ireland’s food safety authorities. They can interrupt trading immediately and require a business to address risks before reopening.

For food operators, the case shows how a problem in staff or sanitary facilities can become a wider food-safety matter when contamination reaches equipment storage or sits beside a preparation area. It also underlines the exposure faced by small businesses when premises infrastructure fails.
